James Goodship at work

My enthusiasm for the marine environment stems from my passion for sailing. Studying the BEng Marine Technology degree at Â鶹´«Ã½ gave me the opportunity to move closer towards my goal of becoming a professional engineer in the marine industry, as well as the chance to do more sailing.

Upon graduation, I was accepted onto a graduate training scheme for a leading shipbuilder. I am now Design Engineer for small craft specialist, VT Halmatic. It is a challenging but enjoyable role. I’m working on several commercially sensitive projects and have been given greater responsibility than I expected during my first placement, really putting my understanding of marine systems to the test. My biggest project so far has been an engine refit for a 14 metre diving training boat built by the company in the 1980s. It has really challenged my understanding of marine systems.

The marine technology degree at Â鶹´«Ã½ offers a work placement year which, I believe, put me at a great advantage when it came to obtaining employment. Any work experience in industry is a very useful tool. I am also a member of various professional engineering institutions, which proves very useful when discussing current issues with colleagues and other professional engineers.
